Extreme expeditions

It was the third of April, when my best friend and I decided that we have had enough of this predictable and safe European life. We are going to hitch-hike across Africa, we promised each other. So, on the sixteenth of July, we found ourselves on the plane to Swaziland. That was our first destination and all we knew, was that we were going to hitch-hike to Morocco. The longest distance we had hitch-hiked before was 340 kilometers, so we weren’t exactly the most experienced, but we definitely are now.
We chaotically travelled through nineteen countries and I am reflecting on the most memorable adventures. The trip was like a visit to a mall, where you choose, which shops you want to enter and which ones you don’t. Do we want to go to Ethiopia today? No. But to Kenya? Yes. When we first landed in Swaziland, we didn’t have a place to sleep, thanks to a lucky coincidence, an elderly lady said that we can spend a few nights at her house. We were overwhelmed and when we heard that the next day, the king of Swaziland, Mswati III, was in a nearby town to open the season of the Marula beer, we were ecstatic. We were even introduced to him and the brightest memory of Swaziland was when we were sitting in the yard of the king’s residence, sipping Marula beer with him.
The following highlight happened in Tanzania, where we visited a game reserve. The workers there liked us and our fascinating idea of hitch-hiking through Africa so much, that they invited us to go with them that night to osberve the very rare white lions and rhinos. It was the most amazing night, the animals were so beautiful and mysterious, but when a suspicious lioness came too close to our car, my heart skipped a few beats. Fortunately, she didn’t find us interesting and appetizing enough, so she turned around and went on her way. So did we.
But everything wasn’t so lovely all the time. In Central African Republic we were cold-heartedly robbed and the ruthless thieves took our expensive cameras.
Then we visitied Somalia, where we found ourselves at a secret ceremony called Zar. It was only meant for women. There they did things that are forbidden, for example smoking, drinking and dancing wildly to music played on djembe drums. They then went into a trance and called on the spirits to guide them. Although the spirits were not so eager to guide us, the experience was definitely one of a kind and worth it.
Those three months in Africa were the best of our lives. The thieves could take our cameras with our precious pictures, but no-one can take our memories. One day, when I am old, I will tell my grandchildren of how their grandmother once hitch-hiked through Africa. People should step out of their comfort-zones and explore the world, that is so friendly, vast and adventurous. It is definitely worth it.
